The envelope contains a picture postcard of the

German Post Office at Shanghai and a photograph of the

staff; also a letter dated June 191o containing the

following passages of interest:-

Your long letter of the 15th January reached me

all right though not, as you expected, through the

American post. All letters, &c. despatched by post

for East Asia are carried on Ffm 9 and we receive

these direct in cardboard cases. Accordingly we also

only make use of cardboard cases on Ffm S. Unfortunate-

ly our route via America is likely to be lost; the

Pacific Mail Steamship Company are proposing to give

up their Journeys to the East in order to take the

coast traffic through the Panama Canal, San Francisco,

New York. This will be a hard blow for us Germans

in the far East. The Pacific Tail Steunship Company
